Deaf Awareness

Service providers should not wait until a customer who is disabled wants to use the service before thinking about adjustments. They must plan ahead - not sit and wait until a customer asks for an adjustment.

The Equality Act (2010)
If you have staff that will have daily contact with clients, customers and colleagues who are partially or totally deaf then by supporting them in providing a Deaf Awareness course you will not only be working towards meeting your obligations under UK equality laws to make your service more accessible; you will also improve your customer service, which in turn, improves customer satisfaction.

What to expect:

The course will help staff to recognise if someone is D/deaf and teach them the correct terms used to describe D/deaf people.

The course will provide practical communication tips including a best practice “do's and don'ts” for communicating with D/deaf people

Staff will receive some basic communication tactics, and be shown how to get the environment right as well as being introduced to many of the communication aids currently available.

Who delivers the training?

Deaf Awareness Training is delivered by our fully qualified trainers who are Deaf and use BSL as their first language.

All Academy trainers have many years of experience and maintain a friendly and relaxed approach; they will use a range of methods including PowerPoint presentations, group work and handouts

All trainers are accompanied by a BSL interpreter.

All Academy Deaf Awareness Tasters sessions are fun, interactive and informative.
